World Revolution

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 10 months ago

In the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena, a chosen few duel to bring about the revolution of the world -- a concept none of them really understands, but all of them know they want. Ultimately, revolutionizing the world turns out to have quite a specific meaning, but "For the revolution of the world!" remains the best all-purpose catchphrase of all time.

In UCJAS

One night as Alexis' Reign drew to a close, three figures skulked about Alexis' bountiful kitchen. They were Alexis herself, incoming president Sushu, and Utena fanboy Brian. Taking their cue from the duels for the revolution of the world found in Brian's favorite anime, the three plotted to make Sushu's Reign an especially memorable one.

It all started early in the first season (namely, fall), when Sushu distributed envelopes sealed with rose stickers to the members of the Animekai. The envelopes proved to contain Rose Seals marking their recipients as registered Duelists(TM). With Jeremy and Cat's discovery of the Rose Bride (a robotic stuffed Chihuahua Brian picked up in Japan) in the basement of the Regenstein Library, the quest to bring the world revolution was off and running.

The shadowy End of the World, who sent the duelists letters from his Gmail address (rose.seal@gmail.com), began orchestrating mostly-weekly duels among the Animekai, with the winner gaining possession of the Rose Bride until the next duel. "Duels" took the form of games, a different one every week, that ranged from competitive Telephone to freeform jan-ken-pon to wholly original creations of the puppetmaster End of the World. (For a more complete list, see the directory at Sushu's Reign.)

During the first season Jim dominated the duels, but the Bride was taken from him at the last minute in an upset victory by Andrew. At the outset of the second season the Bride was taken from the Animekai's hands by the heretofore unknown Duelists of the Black Rose, led by one "Souji Mikage," who quietly recruited applicants to the Mikage Seminar from his Hotmail address. The season ended with Black Rose Duelist Geoff handing the trussed-up Bride over to Brian, who revealed himself to be Mikage! But Brian, giving the second best ham acting performance of his tenure, melted away like a memory (read: graduated) just after receiving the poor Chihuahua, and the Bride was briefly thought dead. Hope was restored with Geoff's announcement that he had stolen the Bride's power source, the Batteries of Dios. The duelists proceeded to duel over these while the Bride recovered in her brother End of the World's loving arms (read: on top of a bookshelf in Brian's room at home).

The third season saw the duelists taking their own Brides as they continued their struggle to revolutionize the world. End of the World ramped up the apocalyptic rhetoric in his weekly letters, and, shortly after ACen, finally announced the duel called Révolution. The champion, Cat, prepared for battle. On the appointed night and at the appointed time, Brian, on a brief visit to campus, arose from his seat to scattered applause. Taking his role as End of the World, Brian received the Sword of Cat and commenced beating it against the Rose Bride's small wooden coffin. When the coffin failed to open, Brian angrily challenged Cat to a final swordfight. After a romp that took the duelists over tables, up and down stairs, and onto the ground, Cat finally knocked the rose from Brian's chest. Calmly discarding her sword, she walked to the coffin and opened it with her bare hands. The Rose Bride was free -- and her true batteries were restored to her battery compartment by Geoff. Cat had revolutionized the world. And thus a legend was forged.
