His and Her Circumstance(Kareshi Kanojyo no Jijyo) (1998)

Original Work : Manga by Masami Tsuda

Genre : School Story / Comedy

Production : J.C.Staff / TV Tokyo / GAINAX

Director : Hideaki Anno

Total Running Time : 24 mins * 26 episodes

The 'genius director' Anno's following work after 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. Different from people's thought in that time, he had come back with this anime which is based on comic school story manga. The original work's comic element and sensitive contents are well presented through Anno's excellent direction in describing teenagers' mental state, so this became one of the most unique school story anime.

The anime mainly focus on mental changes of two main character, Yukino(who is full of vanity and loves to be priased by other people) and Arima (a model student who has a complicated domestic problem). By communicating with each other, Yukino tries to change her vainglorious aspect and Arima tries to dettach his worries about the past.

There was GAINAX budget problem in the middle of seires. It seems that to reduce cost of production, the production used pretty unusual direction, such as using scaned image from the original comic, re-interprets the very same scene by changing voice actors, pasting staff's photo as an extra character instead of drawing a new one, etc. There is a criticism that there are just for reducing cost of production, but the other sides says that, irrelevant to the cost problem, there are very interesting trial in direction.

Anno Hideaki (of Eva, Nadia, Gunbuster, etc) directed adaptation of a popular shoujo manga. Opinion on this anime is divided because of the inevitable GAINAX budget crash near the end of the series. Also, it ends oddly, possibly because they were gunning for a second season. It depends on whether you think an entire episode using paper cutouts of the characters on sticks is clever, cheap, or both. Undisputed is that it is hilariously funny. Look for the numerous Eva references in the series.
